The following applies to all three of the congregations of Valley Pastoral Charge:
St. Andrew’s United Church
Green Ridge United Church
Dominion City United Church

There are a variety of ways to become a member of our congregation.
Choose one of the following and see below for more details.

1. by Baptism If you wish to be baptized.
2. by Baptism and Confirmation If you have not been baptized previously and would like to be confirmed.
3. by Transfer of membership If you are already a member in good standing of another United Church congregation (see 3a below) or of another faith tradition (see 3b below).
4. by Reaffirmation of Christian faith If you cannot provide any requested documents.

1. by Baptism:

a. Your name will be brought to the Board of the particular congregation and the Board will receive (or not receive) your request to be baptized. If you are received, your name will be entered into the Board’s minutes, and then onto our church roll.

b. If you are received, you will be baptized during a Sunday morning service (date to be negotiated with the minister).

2. by Baptism & Confirmation

a. Your name will be brought to the Board of the particular congregation and the Board will receive (or not receive) your request to be baptized & confirmed. If you are received, your name will be entered into the Board’s minutes, and onto our church roll.

b. Note: Anyone who requests to be Confirmed must have been previously baptized (i.e. your baptismal certificate must be shown to the minister), and also must have attended Confirmation classes led by the minister.

c. If you are received, you will be baptized & confirmed during a Sunday morning service (date to be negotiated with the minister).

3. by Transfer of Membership

a. If you were a member of another United Church congregation: You need to ask for a Transfer of Membership Certificate from the other United Church congregation within three years of your request to become a member of our congregation. Bring that Certificate to the minister who will bring it to the Board (or else you can bring it to the Chair of the Board). Or you can have the Certificate mailed to our congregation (see mailing addresses below). Contact our minister if you wish to have help obtaining this Certificate. If you are received by our Board, your name will be entered into the Board’s minutes, and then onto the church roll. (Note: Your previous church will remove your name from its roll). You will be welcomed and recognized as a member of our congregation during a Sunday morning worship service (date to be negotiated with the minister). If you cannot obtain a Certificate from your previous United Church then you may be received by reaffirmation of faith (see below).

b. If you were a member of another faith tradition (eg. Lutheran, Anglican, Mennonite etc.) and wish to transfer into the United Church of Canada you need to request a Transfer of Membership Certificate from the other church within three years of your request to become a member of the United Church. Bring that Certificate to our minister who will bring it to the Board. Or you can have the Certificate mailed to our congregation (see mailing addresses below). Note: You may be asked to meet with the minister to discuss the practice and doctrine of the United Church of Canada and your relationship to it.

4. by Reaffirmation of Christian Faith (relates to any of the above 1, 2 or 3)

a. If you are unable to provide any of the following:

i. Transfer of Membership Certificate from any United Church or other church
ii. Baptismal Certificate from any United Church or other church
iii. Confirmation Certificate from any United Church or other church

b. Meet with the minister to discuss the practice and doctrine of the United Church of Canada and your relationship to it.

c. If you are received, be present at a Sunday worship service to welcome and to recognize you as a member of our congregation (time and date to be negotiated with the minister).

Note: How to transfer from our church to another church:

1. Contact our minister and ask her for a Transfer of Membership Certificate. Usually the minister along with the Clerk of Session can authorize one to be given but in some cases the Board has the only authority to do that.
2. Once a Certificate is issued to you, a letter will be sent to your ‘new’ congregation commending you to their fellowship.
3. your name will be removed from our roll, and this action will be recorded in our Board’s minutes.
