About St. Andrews & the community of Emerson: Emerson is an historic rural community with a population of approximately 680. Its streets are quiet with large shady trees giving it a comfortable homey appearance. It is situated on the banks of the Red River within seconds of Highway 75, the area's major north-south connection. The community, named after poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, traces its roots back to the 1870's., when it became known as "Manitoba's First City," as it greeted travelers as they entered Manitoba. Emerson's proud roots are exemplified in the development of the original site of Historic Fort Dufferin, established in 1877 as a base for the International Joint Commission. It established and marked the Canada/U.S. boundary. It was from Fort Dufferin, that in 1874 the Northwest Mounted Police began their trek westward to the Rocky Mountains. A large portion of Emerson's population is made up of government personnel, RCMP officers, medical personnel and retired farmers. St. Andrew's United Church congregation often joins with other Emerson churches in Ecumenical worship. |
