VPC Minister's Update for week leading up to September 6, 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Greetings Everyone. Here is some of the news of our life this week:

Summer continues for a few more weeks. Thankfully the weather turned warm and sunny. I hope the farmers are happy with it too. Jim’s relatives from Domain will be soaking up the last rays of summer at St. Malo this weekend and we’ll be joining them for some of the weekend. I hope you will be given time to enjoy the outdoors too this weekend in between hours of labouring in the fields, or working in the garden.

Back to School! This week is the start of another school year we send all our good wishes to all children and teens beginning in their new classes. We also pray for the teachers. May they begin the year with energy, enthusiasm, and great satisfaction in their work.

The Joint Worship Committee has been hard at work listening and discerning the worship needs of our three congregations. Confident under the capable leadership of Bev Kirkpatrick, the committee of 7 met on August 26th to review what has been and to look ahead to future worship services. Thank you Bev for your leadership!

Green Ridge United Church is making final preparations for their celebration of 125 years on September 20th. Keep them in your prayers at this joyful time for them.

St. Andrew’s choir practice begins again on September 9th at 7:30 PM. It will be good to be getting back and singing together.

Next week we welcome the Sunday Schools at DC and GR back for another year. Sharon Chubaty, Candace Grier, and Jessica Dearborn have been hard at work organizing things and planning ahead for our children. If you think about the time and commitment required to teach one Sunday School class you may not be impressed, but if you think about every Sunday from Sept to May, preparing and teaching with energy and enthusiasm, then it might impress upon you the depth of commitment these saints among us add to God’s mission. If you see these three people take a moment to thank them for their work.

Sunday’s Scripture
James 2:1-10: In God’s eyes everybody is somebody. I am reminded of something that Curly Riach’s daughter said about him at his funeral: He lived by a strong code of ethics but he was quick to say, “There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us that it behoves any of us to talk about the rest of us.” The scripture begins with a description of a church usher who caters to the rich member and ignores the poor member. I am at St. Andrew’s and Green Ridge this Sunday and we will probably be talking about ushers and ushering in the reflection. I glanced at the list of duties for the usher that is hanging on your bulletin boards and found things like: Turn on the lights, turn on the PA system, Have someone read “Minute for Mission”, and so on. I wonder if something has been overlooked and that is to welcome all people equally (no doubt James would add that to the list). Things might take a turn by Sunday but that is where my wanderings are today.

Pray for PEACE! Work for JUSTICE! Sing for JOY!
Barbara
